I haven't thought those words for roughly six months, but I'm thinking that again. Thankfully, the weather did not trap me in Reno. While I don't believe in superstition or luck, I experienced a lot of what they call luck this weekend and a lot of it of the bad variety. Why was I consistently winning at video poker, while my aces full of kings full house loses to four kings while playing hold 'em? This kind of loss would earn my the bad beat jackpot at many casinos, but not at the Atlantis. And I didn't win nearly enough at video poker to even make up for the hand.

My main opponent, the guy with the pocket kings who eventually won the pot, raises to start the game. I believe one guy to my right calls and then I raise. I have just sat down and I'm one away from the button. The guy on the button (who had pocket jacks) calls. Since I've just sat down and don't appear terribly hardened, the guy with the kings re-raises and I call. The guy with the pocket jacks to my left calls. The flop comes and what appears, a rainbow of a jack, a king, and an ace. Since I doubted that anybody would stay in for an 11 chip bet with a queen and a 10, I doubt I'm facing a straight. Guy with pocket kings bets, I raise, the button jacks guy limps with a call, guy with kings raises again, I call, guy with jacks calls. And guess what comes out next, a king. Guy with kings bets, I raise. I realize I have a fifty-fifty shot of winning this pot as he could just as easily have ace-king as well as pocket kings. The guy with the jacks folds, thinking at least one of us has a better full house. The guy with kings raises, I call. And then I get to weep. Though I did get ten of the 60 or so dollars I placed in this pot back via a spin on the Atlantis' prize wheel. While my aces full of kings is good enough for a spin on the prize wheel, it was not good enough to net me the $100+ it should have.

My scrabble luck was equally poor on Saturday and Sunday, but I'll admit to having good scrabble luck at my past few tournaments (and during the early bird tournament on Friday).
